Many of us know that the fashion and textiles industry isn't the most environmentally friendly, and that our consumption of materials really is damaging the planet. But it doesn't always have to be that way. To prepare for a better future for next generations, Minimello has made the decision to manufacture all of our own products in the UK, and from GOTS certified organic cotton where possible.
It's certainly not the cheapest option, but worth it. Much of the bargain high-street bedding is made in India, China or Turkey, and from fabrics that are washed in chemicals, and then shipped vast distances to reach us. For products we wrap around our kids each night, for years to come, isn't it worth giving them something you can trust is good and honest?
You'll see on our products that we refer to GOTS-certified and field to loom, but might not be familiar with what these refer to.
What is GOTS-certified?
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.
The aim of the standard is to define world-wide recognised requirements that ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labelling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer. What does organic from field to loom mean?
Absolutely no chemicals were used on this cotton, from the process of farming the cotton to weaving it into a finished fabric! Many poplin fabrics are produced using mercerized yarns, which is cotton that's been processed through an alkali bath of sodium hydroxide. No such treatments are used on this fully natural poplin, and the effects of the natural yarn are visible as a subtle, homespun look.
