colour trends for 2020 - tranquil dawn green

It's all about green, or so it seems!

You might have seen in the press lately that Dulux announced it's colour of the year for 2020 as Tranquil Dawn, a pale green grey shade that has been touted as THE colour for interiors for next year.

Shades of pale green for the year 2020  - Tranquil Dawn from Dulux

Interior design and wellbeing

Was I surprised to see it being announced? Well kind of, but also a bit "woo hoo" that my colour research has all been on the right track! I attended a talk with Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux and a panel of colour experts at this year's 100% Design and was so thrilled to hear that there's a definite movement going on in interior design right now, and interior designers are really beginning to base their schemes on the thinking that colour can significantly affect our mood and wellbeing.

So, anyway, why have Dulux, and Pantone both selected pale green shades as their colour for 2020? Well, in their own words, Tranquil Dawn, Dulux's colour reflects a “growing desire to understand what it is to be human at a time when advances in technology are making us feel increasingly disconnected from each other,” while Neo Mint is an "oxygenating, fresh tone that harmonises science and technology with nature. It has a cool, futuristic tech feel but also connects with plant life and nature" so say Pantone.

In short, it's all about bringing the green of nature indoors, engaging with our need for time away from technology and creating a feeling of calm in a busy world. And that doesn't just have to be reserved for our living rooms, we can bring natural colours into any room in the home, but green in the bedroom is an especially good choice to create a calm environment, just what adults and children alike need to be able to relax before bedtime.

Make the colours of the outdoors part of your child's day

We all feel the pressure of every day life and know that our mental health can be impacted by constantly being connected. So it's great news that interior designers are starting to realise that colour can have such an impact on our mood and behaviour and that this thinking is becoming the new normal for home interiors.
